About the event
In this workshop, we will:
-Introduce ourselves and why we love the Gothic aesthetic;
-Read together passages describing setting from Jane Eyre, ("original" gothic lit - 1847) The Hacienda (historical fic released in 2022), and Sundial (modern gothic fic released in 2022);
-Compare and contrast, identify together a set of gothic elements/tropes we noted in the passages;
-Go over the "must-haves" for any gothic fiction (in any time period);
-Freewrite a list of formerly grand places in our modern world that might be abandoned (possible settings for modern gothic stories);
-Ask participants to share their ideas;
-Then writing time! Each participant will choose a modern setting and write for ten minutes, focusing on the first time a protagonist sees the setting;
-If we have time after that, we can see if anyone wants to read their first paragraph for us.
