The Rules of Breaking and How to Break Them: A Workshop on Line Breaks

Poetry is often defined by its use of the line break. But a line break is more than a simplistic indication that the written work is poetry and not prose. It is an opportunity for tension, creation, double-meaning, and revelation. Join us for a workshop dedicated to the art of breaking a line. Learn some good go-to rules on how you can improve or rethink your approach to breaking a line. Then learn how to break those rules. In this workshop, we will look at model poems, examine the function (or lack thereof) of the line breaks, and discuss their efficacy. There will be a short-form lecture on the topic as well as generative exercises and an opportunity to share.
